Biggest Ever Meadow Sowing In Lockleaze
On Thursday 10th April we were delighted to hold the Big Lockleaze Community Meadow Sow. Over 55 members of our community came together to plant a new meadow on Gainsborough Square!
We worked together to cut and turn over the turf, rake the soil and sow the seeds to create 240 m2 of meadow. Thank you so much to all the children, families, long-time Really Wild Lockleaze contributors and LNT staff who got stuck in. Residents said that “it was a great unexpected afternoon”, and that creating wildlife habitats together was ‘the best way to learn to value nature and insects”.
It wasn’t all hard work- we had refreshments, time to talk about upcoming events like the Lockleaze Family Feast and a great atmosphere with people meeting for the first time.

The seed mixture is from Emorsgate Seeds and was chosen to be right for our soil, to support local insects including bees and butterflies, and to bring some vibrance to the Square. Here are some species to look out for when the flowers start in June.

This event was a triumphant end to the delivery of the current phase of the Really Wild Lockleaze Project, but we still have plenty going as we evaluate the project and share our story. No Mow May is on the way, and you can still attend workdays at Lockleaze Sports Centre, bee monitoring, plant ID workshops, and more. Plus, keep an eye out for our Really Wild survey where you can share your thoughts about the project, ideas for the future, and enter to win a voucher prize!
