MONDAY MOTIVATION! - 'My Aikido Blog' by Verity.

My Aikido Blog!

Hi! My name’s Verity and I “discovered” Aikido while at my school. It was an option for a compulsory afterschool club, so I thought “Sure let’s try it!” From the first session I had already learnt a little about the

techniques and skills. It was fun so I asked Darren if he did a club outside of school. He did, so I joined it. And I’m here to tell you about it.

What’s Aikido, and what’s it about?

Aikido is a Japanese martial art focused on protecting yourself while trying to hurt your opponent as little as possible. But don’t think it’s a softy sport! It’s based around throws and joint locks that can hurt if you

need it to! The techniques are effective and can help you in many situations!

Why did you join Aikido?

I wanted to learn self defence and have fun!

Were you nervous before joining and why?

ABSOLUTELY! This was because I didn’t know anyone, I didn’t know if the other kids would be “tough” with me, and I didn’t want to get hurt. Thankfully, everyone was kind, gentle and helpful.

What are the benefits?

You learn to defend yourself, but you also meet new people, and learn things from a different part of the world! It also improves strength and stamina.

Any surprises?

A few. I had already learnt a few techniques from school, but as I learnt them here, I saw how effective they were! Also, for a brief period I was surprised by the customs, as I had never seen them before.

Hoped you liked the blog, and feel free to join North Bristol Aikido Dojo!
