Really Wild Lockleaze is springing!
Project Update
Following on from the Community Climate Action plan produced with residents, since last September we have been working with residents on the Really Wild Lockleaze project. This is about how we support nature in our community.
Giving space to our wild plants, and creatures is critical because so many of them are at risk - 1 in 4 of our native mammals are threatened. Over 80% of the population live in cities so working with people to support nature in an urban setting is crucial., ¾ of our food needs pollinators to grow.
The project also has loads of other benefits as living close to nature creates many physical and mental health benefits, as well as making us more resilient to climate change. During our community plan many residents were concerned about the loss of green space and habitat with all the new developments and wanted to take action to protect and support our furry and feathered neighbours.
What have we been up to?
Over the last month, our full project team is now in place, with Eleanor (project co-ordinator) joining Eric our ecologist, and Maria our Community Activator. We have been running some small starter events - starting to survey what wild plants we already have on our greens, and working with our Wellbeing Gardening Group to grow some wild flowers to be planted out at a later date. We've litter picked with residents making our neighbourhood more nature friendly, and we've been on the radio and attending events to spread the word and let people know how to get involved. We have also set up a way people can record any wild flower meadow they are creating. Look out for our wildflower walk as part of the Festival of Nature coming soon, and we are working on loads of events for the summer so watch this space.
Please get in touch if you feel inspired to be part of this! We are particularly looking for people who:
Want to plant wild flowers on a verge, or bit of public green near them
Want to be part of a planning group to make the project happen
Are already doing stuff to help nature in their garden
