Wildlife woodland creation at Lockleaze Sports Centre
147 trees planted by volunteers!
For the last month, we have been working hard every Thursday at Lockleaze Sports Centre, clearing the final brambles, and planting a strip of woodland around an attenuation ditch. We were really pleased to be joined by students from the Bristol Bears Hitz project, and volunteers from the Lockleaze Green Gym.
We planted 147 native shrubby trees, the majority of which are Alder Buckthorne, which is the food plant for the Yellow Brimstone Butterfly, which is rare locally, and we hope to give a big boost!
This is the first part of a project which Really Wild Lockleaze are doing in conjunction with the Lockleaze Green Gym and the Hitz Project, to create new wooded areas, and also wetland wildflower areas. This will transform the drainage ditches behind the all-weather-pitches into a mini nature reserve!
There’s a footpath there so you can walk past and see what we are doing. From February you will be able to join us planting trees and wildflowers every Thursday (mostly 11am - 3pm) until the end of March. Get in touch if you want to be part of this exciting project!
