Ground Breaking day at Stanfield Close!

Residents kick off our project for making more space for nature on Lockleaze’s greens and verges

On Saturday, ten residents from Stanfield Close got together and started planting out plants for nature on their green on their Close.

This is the Really Wild Lockleaze project’s first green to start work, so we were very excited!

Eric, our ecologist popped some (no alcohol) fizz to celebrate, as our star resident Katherine put the first spade in the ground. It was Katherine who first invited us to the close, and has also helped get her neighbours involved. The celebration was filmed by Katie, a local resident who is volunteering for us by making films of our project - check out the fantastic short film!

Together, the residents planted out 220 bulbs under the two mature trees on the close, as well as three fruit bushes. They also enjoyed cups of tea, biscuits, and meeting each other - some for the first time.

These plants will provide much needed food for bees, butterflies, birds, hedgehogs, and more! This is the first part of the plan they made for nature  in the summer at a community meeting on the greenspace. After a community consultation, the Really Wild Lockleaze Team has then been working with the council to get permission.

From here, the residents plan to plant some fruit trees, a wildlife hedge, and make a wildflower meadow patch. Watch this space for more exciting updates!

What we planted:

Bulbs: Fritillaria meleagris, mixed crocus species, snow drops, wild tulips, Crocus tommasinianus, allium moly, and Narcissi obvallaris

Fruit bushes: Black currant, bilberry, and logan berry
