Charity Applications Support Volunteer

NBAC are particularly keen to recruit local residents and also people from BAME communities.

This role will involve supporting people to apply for financial support in times of crisis. You will be working one-to-one with clients through phone or face-to-face appointments. Currently, volunteers can be home-based or work from our office in Lockleaze.

What can you gain?

What does the role involve?

  • Supporting people in financial difficulty to access products and services they require.

  • There are a number of local and national charities that offer funds (usually to purchase goods such as furniture or kitchen appliances) to people with limited/no savings. Your role will be to discuss with the client their financial situation and their need for support.

  • Researching appropriate charities based on the client's individual situation.

  • Completing online or paper application(s) with the client.

Time Commitment

  • Flexible days and times.

  • Minimum 3 hours per week.

  • 6 month commitment.


Advice Support Volunteer - Welfare benefit applications

This role involves supporting our clients with disability benefit application forms at weekly appointments. Currently, volunteers can be home-based or work from our office in Lockleaze.

What can you gain?

  • Development of benefits knowledge and communication skills.

  • Full induction and role training, as well as access to wider NBAC training opportunities.

What does the role involve?

  • Weekly client appointments to support people applying for disability benefits.

  • Recording client information on NBAC’s case management system.

  • Follow up calls to track client progress through the benefits application system.

Time Commitment

  • Flexible days

  • Half day a week

  • Minimum 9 month commitment

Advice Support Volunteer - Mandatory Reconsiderations

If a client has had their benefit application turned down or they are unhappy with the decision they can challenge it by requesting a mandatory reconsideration. This role involves supporting NBAC clients with mandatory reconsideration requests through weekly client appointments. Currently, volunteers can be home-based or work from our office in Lockleaze.

What can you gain?

  • Experience of working with clients one-to-one.

  • Development of benefits knowledge and appeals system.

  • Full induction and role training, as well as access to wider NBAC training opportunities.

What does the role involve?

  • Assisting clients to complete mandatory reconsideration letters/applications and acting as an advocate for clients where necessary.

  • Writing letters requesting medical evidence from GPs or other healthcare professionals as appropriate.

  • Keeping accurate, confidential case records.

  • Working with the wider team offering Welfare Benefits support and advice.

Time Commitment

  • Flexible days

  • Half day a week

  • Minimum 9 month commitment

Closing date for applications: 24 September 2021

Interviews: 5th October 2021

Training for the role will involve committing to a maximum of 6 x half-days training. Planned to run on a Tuesday from 19th October (to be confirmed)
