What is Community-led Housing? September 2019
Following the discussions with the residents of Turner Gardens in August, we opened our doors to the wider Lockleaze community. It was great to speak with residents about the broad range of reasons why ‘community-led housing’ can provide direct benefits to local places and people. Colin from GCP architects (who worked with us on our feasibility study) came to talk with people about initial considerations when thinking about a new housing development and we listened to what people would prioritise if they could design their own homes. Common themes included:
“Communal green spaces”.
“Brick homes feel more secure”
“Love maisonettes”
“Using local contractors”
“Allocating housing to local people”
“Giving people the opportunity to be involved in the design process”
We had lots of thought provoking conversations with plenty of great ideas brought to the table, and a full list of comments can be seen here [insert word cloud].The comments from the session have been recorded and compiled. This will help to start building a set of priorities for the project and inform a brief soon to be open to architects as we progress the project beyond the feasibility stage!
