Is Autumn the Secret Season for Gardeners?

Hello from Buzz Community Garden!

As the leaves turned golden and the air cooled, the Buzz Community Garden became a hub of activity and excitement. This autumn brought a bountiful harvest of peas, potatoes and earthy beetroot, shared among the community members. The garden also offered some less common produce, such as artichokes, adding a touch of the unusual to the harvest table. The abundance of tomatoes was a particular success, with locals coming to pick them, symbolising the true spirit of a community garden.

Buzz Planting – The Wonder of Spinach

We were particularly happy to have some spinach plants donated! This leafy green powerhouse is not only packed with nutrients but also boasts an incredible ability to withstand frost and keep growing all year round. This makes it a fantastic addition to any garden, especially for those looking to have a continuous supply of fresh greens. Its "cut and come again" nature allows you to harvest what you need without uprooting the entire plant, ensuring a continuous supply that will regrow for future pickings. YESSSSS!

Borage a Natural Liquid Fertiliser - Recipe

As Borage is nitrogen-rich providing essential nutrients to plants and soil we made our own fertiliser.

Easy peasy.  Add as many borage leaves and flowers to a container as you can, fill with water (one part borage two-part water) and cover with a lid for two weeks. Then strain the liquid – it will be smelly (put the decomposed leave on your compost.  To use it, dilute it with ten parts water. Put straight on the soil or spray your plants, to give them a generous growth boost

Sharing is Caring

There's something truly magical about connecting with nature, especially when it's right on your own doorstep. Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust facilitated another free session from Avon Wildlife Trust recently. They brought Buzz magic to life for a group of mini nature explorers, and perhaps the highlight of the morning was the 'pond aquarium,' offering a glimpse of an ecosystem at work.  Which reminds me, we saw our first newt at Buzz in September!

Buzzer Jay, treated us all to an Indian feast of his homemade lentil dahl.  It’s lovely sharing different cultures, and the dahl went down a treat.  A warm hug on a chilly Saturday

Creating natural bird feeders is a fun and rewarding activity. By using simple materials like pine cones, lard, and seeds, we made dozens of feeders for our fluffy friends. We cannot keep up with the demand!

Winter is Coming

The leaves are starting to drop now, a sign to start preparing the soil for next season.  We have started collecting leaves to transform into leaf mulch, a protective blanket that will protect the soil from the harsh winter elements. This mulch not only insulates but also as it breaks down over time, will add vital nutrients back into our raised beds. And there is a lot of compost turning going on, and we are starting to think about what we will do next. How exciting.

Before the end of the year, we will be running some natural festive decoration workshops, which I’m really looking forward to.  Keep an eye out  for dates and more information, it will be lovely to see you there!

Come on down every Wednesday and Saturday 10 – 12pm. Free fun for all the family. No experience needed and all tools provided.
