Lockleaze Youth Climate action group
After extensive advertising and promotion we have 9 young people who have become our core group , we meet every Tuesday 5.30pm till 7pm.
We will continue to promote and other young people are welcomed to join at any point.
The first 2 weeks we asked the young people ‘come up with lots of creative ways we can engage our community about making little changes , to help the environment ‘
It was deliberately open-ended to allow the young people to aim high and lead the session-they had free rein and wrote lots of ideas.
We asked them ‘imagine money wasn’t a problem... what events could we do?’
Here are a few of their amazing ideas;
● Silent disco litter pick
● Community pledge art piece
● Photography competition
● Eco festival in June “National Green Week”
● Make a film encouraging and informing residents about small changes they can make
● Meat free Thursday, asking community to post food picture with recipe
● Meat free cooking night, to trial the recipes and lead by example
● Visit primary schools and make eco friendly sandwich covers for lunch boxes.
The young people recently put on their first Halloween eco event.
Working up to the event the young people, learnt the skills to make it successful.
● Marketing
● Project management
● Emails to community partners and local businesses to ask for raffles
● Designing and creating posters
● Decide what activities will be at the event
The young people made a ‘ web of woes ‘. They asked the attendees to write their worries about the environment in Lockleaze and share things they are concerned about on spider shapes, which they then attached to the web. It was very effective helping residents focus on their worries and was a focal point for a lot of conversations.
They also had a Halloween shop where other young people could pick a costume for free.
There were vegan cakes and arts and crafts suitable for any age and all eco friendly.
The event was a huge success with 83 people attending.
The event was free to our community, but we asked for donations.
The young people raised £135.
The young people will decide how the money will be spent on future engagement events and activities.
