Fight for the future of Lockleaze

Picture of the proposed new development

Lockleaze deserves more and better

The Cameron Centre consultation has come round again. You might remember seeing this in April 2021 when residents campaigned against proposals and the Council backed off plans which were not well received during an election. The plans have come around again.

The consultation is open until 10 March 2023 - respond here or you can see the plans in the Hub and pick up a paper copy to send responses to the Council. We are hosting a drop-in during our Hubbub cafe next Wednesday 22nd February 12 - 2pm to discuss the plans - we will invite Council officers to attend and will discuss with residents what it means for Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust who run the Hub and the Cameron Centre but don’t own either building.

Our major concerns about the plans are as follows:

  1. We need more space

The current plans have 302sqm of non-residential space, we need 450sqm to provide viable community activity including affordable hall for existing and new groups such as faith groups and martial arts, nursery and food/social area.

  2. The plans could be more attractive and more exciting

This is one of the highest points in Lockleaze and a key focal point in the square, these designs should be aspirational and reflect the brilliant community and love of green space and wildlife, not look like a prison block.

  3. Part of the design for a cut-through depends on successful CPO of the pub which the Council has committed to since 2012 and still not managed to do.

  4. Parking is an issue - the development will take away the 6ish spaces in the Police station car park, and add 20 spaces for 37 households with no space for community centre visitors.

Please help us by responding to the Consultation saying:

  • You have concerns about the layout

  • You support LNT bid for 450sqm

  • Exactly what social space you would like to see on the square

  • What you think about the design

  • Any other concerns

These plans were a surprise to us at Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust and we are working hard to respond to the Council. Already it is impacting on our tenants. Post pandemic and in a cost of living crisis we are working hard to support our community and this could not have come at a worse time. Please support the organisation, our staff and volunteers by showing your support and your kindness for people doing their best in difficult circumstances.
