’’Magic Hours on Earth
… is a photo project made in Stoke Park with Esther and Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust.
A great bunch of kids from the Lockleaze area took two dusk walks through Stoke Park Estate with Esther in May 2021, to play with old analogue cameras, hear ancient myths, fool with home-made masks and explore the imagination.
They made fires, spoke memories of Stoke Park while creating new images based on stories of animal weddings and shapeshifting humans. The kids listened to the trees, felt the soil and blew dandelion heads while the light changed all around, and photos were taken. Dusk arrived and edges and forms fuzzed and blurred. It was magic.
This work is an extension of Kitchen Table Photo Club, an ongoing project set up by Esther in 2018 where children and adults come to her home in Bristol to sit around the table, eat snacks and discover the mysteries and joys of analogue photography. They explore the elemental, juxtapose opposites, wonder about the 'decisive moment' and do heaps of creative play. The basics of photography - how to expose, focus and frame - are covered, kicked about and forgotten. Mostly they mess around and play like artists.’’
